CFP: Animals and Culture

The Northeast Popular/American Culture Associations invites paper and panel proposals for its special topics – and hopefully continuing – Animals and Culture area!
Paper and panel proposals that explore a range of animal-culture interactions are invited.
Below is a list of possible topics but in general historical and contemporary analyses and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome. Keeping in mind that proposals should appeal to a broad audience and keep specialized terminology to a minimum, submissions that engage with the Anthropocene and other ecocritical approaches are especially encouraged.
All submissions should be framed by a research perspective and should not be overtly commercial. Also, despite how much we all want to help, not limited to information about animal/rescue organizations and advocacy.
Possible topics could include (but are not limited to):
Animals as companions to humans
Therapy animals
Animals in literature, art and other media
Wildlife genre and documentary
Symbols and caricatures
Celebrity animals and animal performers, including presentation on Facebook pages and YouTube channels
Commodification of animals
Animals in advertising, branding, and commercial franchises
News coverage of animals and animal issues
Animal photography
Animal memorialization
NEPCA welcomes individual papers and complete panels. Papers are generally 15-20 minutes in length. Your proposal can be of completed studies of the topic or research in progress. It is especially helpful if you are able to present images or other material during the virtual presentation in order to help those attending best understand the arguments being made.
